I travelled with Ben Benson (who spends his year working both in the UK and the Ukraine) to Serbia via Budapest. This involved an eight and a half hour journey by plane and car finally arriving after midnight at our destination. We were going to work with a loose network of churches into which Siloam ministries seeks to give encouragement and support. Churches in the network are located in both Serbia and Croatia. Our remit was to teach leaders and to encourage their congregations. During the six days we ministered into at least eight different groups of hungry believers and spent a morning with a small group of leaders from the region.
Churches in Serbia are mostly quite small as many people are fearful of joining the more Spirit lead works because of a great deal of opposition from the more traditional churches. One pastor told me that he had received both letters and emails from other church leaders telling him to stop what he was doing as he was not wanted or needed in the country.
Often older people are told to encourage their younger relatives not to go to these churches which are considered sects. Yet despite this there are growing groups of believers who are seeking to hear what God is saying and live by a Biblical model with the Holy Spirit’s encouragement.
Many of the churches we visited were growing and had a good mixture of both young and older people all worshiping together, quite unusual in these nations! They were open to the moving of the Holy Spirit and we saw people healed of many different ailments as well as being told of healings that had taken place through our ministry the last time we visited the country.
Amongst the leaders we visited there was a strong desire to train and equip their people to live effective Christian lives and raise up a new generation of church leaders which we were pleased to take a small part in.
May and June of 2009 will see us returning to the region on our journey to and return from Bulgaria with our smaller tent to work with three churches in both Serbia and Croatia. This will involve running crusades and resourcing the churches to reach out into their communities. If you would like to be involved in this or would like to know more about what we are doing in the region, please contact us by clicking here.

Following the first ever Tent Event in Croatia last spring which was incredibly successful in seeing many people saved and healed, Tim and Kim arrived in Osijek for a weekend conference at the end of November. This took place in the Krscanskog Centre in a city which is the fourth largest in Croatia with a population of around 115,000. It is situated on the river Drava which joins the Danube nearby.
During the war from 1991 to 1995, the city avoided heavy destruction although the nearby town of Vukovar was heavily shelled and over a thousand citizens died in the area from the daily bombardment. While some buildings still have mild damage, most often the occasional superficial pockmark from shelling, the city's facades are generally in good shape,
due to extensive restoration in recent times, preserving the charm of its intricate Austro-Hungarian architecture which is mixed with impressive modern structures.
Though there is now only minor evidence of war damage to the buildings, the people still carry the scars of trauma from the conflict.
The church which is led by pastor Slavko Tutic is made up of University students, graduates and a good mix of young families and older couples. The church enjoys enthusiastic Spirit led worship and has a heart to reach out into their community.
Tim, along with pastors Robert Starcic and Danijel Alic from Croatia, ministered to over one hundred people on each of the three days encouraging the believers to take hold of that for which Christ has taken hold of us and inspiring them to believe God for great things. We were privileged to see Father move in healing and salvation.
As always, the church were delighted to host such an event and see it as part of their ongoing strategy to see increase in this ex-communist country which is still coming to terms with the conflict in the region. There is much need for healing of body, mind and spirit to take place amongst the people. We continue to pray for this region and support the work there.
Early spring found a small Spearhead team working in Osijek in Croatia running the first tent mission in living memory in this ex-communist country. Although the Christians and the weather were warm and welcoming there is still an element within the nation that do not want the gospel of Jesus Christ preached to its people.
The day before the event was due to start the advertising was systematically removed from around the town. So when Tim got up to speak and showed people a large poster and asked if anyone had seen one, the answer came back a resounding “No!” to which he replied, “the communists wanted to keep you from the Good News we have for you, war sought to stop you hearing the truth about Jesus and now there are still those who don’t want you to have an opportunity to hear the gospel but they will not succeed because God loves the people of Croatia”.
Every evening started with talented young people from the local church playing classical music. This was followed by a film looking into whether there is any evidence for life after death. After a short break people were invited to join the evening service where we were lead in praise and worship to our wonderful God by a team from the local church. There then followed a clear gospel message from evangelist Tim Grant. Every night saw people come forward for healing and to be set free from sickness and addictions. From the first night there were reports of God at work in the lives of those who were being ministered to and numbers attending grew as the event continued. On average around fifteen people a night came forward to give their lives to Jesus and accept His offer of love and forgiveness. Many lives were changed and powerfully affected during this short mission. Please pray for the wonderful people of this nation and the church that is seeking to reach out to them with the Good News.
